Medical Screening

Every office visit will include a check of blood pressure and vitals.  Your condition will be evaluated to detect a need for conventional medical attention.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Evaluation

In Chinese Medicine, disease is categorized by symptoms and patterns rather than by an organisms or chemical processes.  To diagnose your pattern, you will be asked about your sleep, energy, appetite, thirst, and elimination.  Your tongue and pulse will also be examined.  Since your body is dynamic and your pattern can change and progress quickly, your pattern will be evaluated each time you visit.

Acupuncture
There are hundreds of acupuncture points on your body, but don’t worry--an average treatment involves only the 5-10 points that are best for you!  Your point prescription will be catered to your particular pattern and body type to treat both your symptoms and the underlying causes.  Just as a symphony accomplishes something a single note cannot on its own, a carefully chosen acupuncture combination can yield great results that any single point could not accomplish alone.

Electrical Acupuncture

Electrical Acupuncture, often called “E-Stim,” involves applying a very mild electric current to selected acupuncture needles.  This mode of treatment is especially effective for stubborn muscle pain and neurological conditions.

Auricular Acupuncture

Auricular means ear.  Just like the foot is a micro-system for the whole body in reflexology, the ear can also serve as a micro-system for the whole body.  Auricular Acupuncture can assist with smoking cessation, weight loss, drug and alcohol detoxification, and pain control.  It can be done with small needles or with “ear seeds.”

Acupressure & “Tui Na”
“Tui Na” is the Chinese term for a variety of manual therapies including acupressure, rubbing, stretching, or skin scraping (“gua sha”).  If necessary, some “tui na” may be included in your treatment.

Custom Herbal Formula Prescription

If you are interested in taking herbs, a Chinese herbal formula will be prescribed specifically to meet your needs.   Formulas are available as tablets, which are the most economical and easiest to take.  Powders or tinctures can be ordered upon request.  For the best therapeutic results, the a custom “raw” herbal formula can be special ordered for you to cook yourself at home--the traditional way.  Possible herb-drug interactions will be checked using a comprehensive data base if you are taking any pharmaceutical prescriptions.

Cupping Therapy

During cupping, a special glass cup is placed over acupuncture points or meridians and a vacuum is created.  This treatment is really great for muscle pain, as well as some respiratory, digestive and gynecological issues.  The side effect is bruising as a result of the suction, but it is not painful and clears up in a few days--most people find cupping treatments very relaxing and enjoyable, like a deep tissue massage.

Moxibustion Therapy

The Moxa plant is more commonly known as Mugwort, or
Artemesia vulgaris for the botanically inclined.  Moxibustion involves burning the leaf hairs of the Moxa plant near acupuncture points or affected areas of the body.  The warmth and smoke of the Moxa has a special ability to stimulate circulation and can be used with acupuncture to treat a wide variety of problems.

Infrared Therapy
Infrared therapy is frequently applied during acupuncture treatments.  It makes the treatment feel warm, cozy, and relaxing—but that’s not all!  It can improve the efficacy of your acupuncture treatment by improving your circulation.  It’s also said to reduce pain, stiffness, and muscle spasm.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Nutritional Counseling

Why is a glass of lemonade so perfect for a summer day, and a bowl of chili so perfect for a fall afternoon?   Every food has a subtle (or not so subtle) energetic effect on the body.  Chinese Nutrition takes into account the energetic nature of food, and dietary recommendations are made to help balance the body’s condition.  This approach to nutrition can have profound effects on health and wellness.
